I just read an article by John Carmack on Functional programming in C++ which could be interesting to turn into a talk.
You would need to create code examples and helpful guidelines to make the presented thoughts more approachable. It would especially be nice to compare a functional and non-functional approach in terms of the ability to reason about code in multi-threaded environments.
