Enrollment process

This process is highly individual and slightly magical. If you recently enrolled yourself, please report below on deviations from the following masterplan.

Masterplan

The rought way to do it goes like this:
  • The Promotionsbüro (graduation office) will be the starting point of your journey.
  • In the download section of the Promotionsbüro, you can find the necessary paperwork. It should be the same for both departments (FB12 (Computer Science + Math) or FB13 (Physics)).
  • As of right now, there is an information sheet for the stuff you need and the actual Antrag.
  • Fill this out and submit all required documents in person
  • Pro-tip: bring two copies of everything!
  • Wait. Long. Call them. Wait longer. Find out that they lost your stuff. Repeat from beginning.
  • Once you are accepted = you or your advisor received a "Annahme als Doktorand"-letter you can enroll yourself online here
  • After finishing your online application, you will get a form which you have to sign and bring to the Studierendensekretariat along with the documents listed on this form (e.g. the letter of acceptance, high school diploma, passport photo, and health insurance certificate).
  • If you are an international student, before going to the "Studierendensekretariat" you must have ALL your diplomas and transcritps checked by the International Office . Today, they accept German or English translations. They also accept conclusion statements, if you don't have your official diploma yet. Pay attention to the office hours!
  • Congratulations, you are enrolled and can pay the semester fee . Now, tranfer the money to the university bank account and wait more one or two weeks for their letter. The letter will contain final instructions on how to finally get your Goethe Card.

As an applicant at HGS-HIRe

There are several important aspects one has to consider if one wishes to do their Ph.D. in Physics as a member of the Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion Research.
If you apply for membership or even a scholarship you have to keep in mind the following points:

1. You have to be enrolled as a Ph.D. student at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. To do so you can adhere to the following procedure.
  • At first you need to apply at the Physics faculty of the Frankfurt University. The application form can be found here, which is located on this site.
  • Once you have been accepted you need to take the acceptance letter to the Studierendensekretariat which is located in the PEG building at the campus of Westend. There you will receive a form that allows you to either change from Physics Master to Physics Promotion or to enrol as a new student at the University of Frankfurt.
  • As already mentioned above it is required, as part of the participation in the HGS-HIRe program, to be officially enrolled as a Ph.D. student at the university of Frankfurt. This also means that you have to pay the correspondent tuition fees.

You will need both documents, the acceptance at the faculty of Physics and the acceptance at the university of Frankfurt as a Ph.D. student, until you can officially become a member of HGS-HIRe.

2. You will also need a valid health insurance for the whole duration of your membership at HGS-HIRe. This one is not as straightforward anymore since the gentle reader has a myriad of choices in Germany. Your humble author of this tutorial suggests that it might be a safe bet to apply at a statutory health insurance. An overview can be found at the German wikipedia page, namely here.

These are the three requisites that you have to comply with to become part of HGS-HIRe.

Individual reports

John Smith

I had to do an oral examination in Computer Science for unknown reasons.

Alice E. Mallory

My examination committe had me jump through hoops. Literally. All sorts of silly things. The worst part was when they asked me to walk to the end of the Möbius strip.

Bruno

They asked for a pdf of my Master's Thesis also for unknown reasons. The whole process took more than two months.
